Het Sundance Film Festival had zijn deel van grote deals dit jaar, van de record-setting $ 17.500.000,69 die Neon en Hulu betaalden voor Palm Springs tot een paar $ 12 miljoen deals voor The Night House (Searchlight) en Uncle Frank (Amazon).
Terwijl het kruit nog aan het bezinken was, reikte het 2020 fest zaterdagavond zijn jaarlijkse prijzen uit tijdens een ceremonie in Basin Fieldhouse in Park City, waar ook werd onthuld dat Tabitha Jackson is benoemd tot de nieuwe directeur, als opvolger van de aftredende John Cooper.
De grote winnaar vanavond was Minari van Lee Isaac Chung, die zowel de Grote Juryprijs als de Publieksprijs in de wacht sleepte in de Amerikaanse Dramatische Competitie. Gebaseerd op het echte leven van Chung, volgt het drama een Koreaans-Amerikaanse familie die van L.A. naar Arkansas verhuist om de Amerikaanse droom na te jagen.
Andere films die onlangs de bovenste twee prijzen op het fest wisten te pakken, zijn onder meer Birth of a Nation in 2017 en Me and Earl and the Dying Girl in 2015.
Heidi Ewing’s I Carry You With Me, de publiekswinnaar van de NEXT-sectie, won vanavond ook twee prijzen.
Crip Camp, de Netflix-docu die wordt executive geproduceerd door Barack en Michelle Obama, won de publieksprijs in de Amerikaanse documentaire sectie, terwijl Identifying Features (Sin Senas Particulares), geregisseerd door Fernanda Valadez, de publieksprijs pakte in de World Cinema Dramatic-sectie.
Bij de prijsuitreiking van vorig jaar werden prijzen uitgedeeld aan verschillende films die doorgingen naar de bioscoop en zelfs naar het prijzenseizoen, met Chinonye Chukwu’s Clemency, Brittany Runs a Marathon, One Child Nation en Honeyland onder de topwinnaars.
